Consulates offer a variety of services and assistance to foreign nationals.
For example, the American, German, and French consulates in St. Petersburg do
the following: passport replacements, notary services, birth certificates, absentee
voting, federal income tax forms and emergency help.
In Case of an Emergency Only: The consulate "duty officer"
of many consulates can be reached 24 hours a day. Call immediately in case of
arrest or other legal difficulties. They can contact an attorney or act on your
behalf. They will also provide medical evacuation and assistance in the event
of a death. Only in an emergency can they perform money transfers.
Travel Advisories: If you plan to travel elsewhere, especially
to one of the former republics, they issue timely travel advisories and information
about obtaining visas.
Registration: For your safety you are advised to register with
your consulate so that you may be easily contacted in case of emergency.
