Medical Treatment
Several private medical groups are staffed with Western doctors and top Russian
specialists who provide medical care at standards approaching those of the West.
The American Medical Center, listed below, has well staffed emergency facilities,
family practice, dentistry clinic and lab are staffed with Western doctors.
The Emergency Medical Consulting provide round-the-clock emergency medical care
and medical evacuation. Cardiovascular Consultants St. Petersburg provide diagnosis
and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
There are dozens of policlinics (out-patient or ambulatory care or large HMO)
and private medical groups in Saint Petersburg as well as a number of outstanding
medical research institutes that provide highest level of services. The most
experienced is Clinic Complex, which used to be the clinic for foreign diplomats,
visitors, Russian officials and executives. Foreigners usually pay a small charge
for services, most often much less expensive than similar treatment in the West.
As in the US and Western Europe, the best medical care in Russia is often found
in or associated with research institutes or medical schools. The St. Petersburg
Medical Military Academy also has an excellent reputation.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE for foreign visitors is offered by several groups
in St. Petersburg. Emergency Medical Consulting provides round-the-clock emergency
medical care. In case of extreme emergencies, they will stabilize the patient
and arrange for medical evacuation by air to any country. The American Medical
Center can handle basic medical emergencies at the family practice level (lab
tests, EKG, emergency prescriptions). They also provide medical evacuation.
Clinic Complex has a well-staffed, well-stocked ambulance and makes emergency
house calls around the clock. For illnesses they use the City Health Care Center
No. 20 which has a special section for foreigners with far higher standards,
service and treatment than most other Russian hospitals offer.

Dentists
Russian dentistry has improved greatly in the past few years as Russian dentists
have finally gained access to Western materials, techniques, and equipment. True Western
style dentistry is now possible to obtain and in some cases is performed by Western
dentists. Be prepared however, to pay a hefty price for it.
